Team AZ Shines in “The Miracle City”
From July 5th to10th, 2024, Birmingham, Alabama hosted the inspiring Transplant Games of America. Thousands of people from approx. 44 states and three countries came to “The Magic City” not only to unite, but also raise awareness of organ, eye, and tissue donation and transplantation and to honor the families who gave the gift of life, Thousands of transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, caregivers, donation and transplant professionals, supporters, volunteers, and spectators converged for a week filled with camaraderie, resilience, and unforgettable moments.
The Transplant Games have a rich and memorable 33-year history of bringing together a community of individuals who have been touched by the miracle of donation and transplantation. The Games include over 20 competitions for recipients and living donors where team members compete to earn gold, silver, and bronze medals for the overall. Along with 60+ special events throughout the week that provide opportunities to celebrate donors, attend lectures, workshops, and interact with friends and associates. The Games provided a platform for these athletes to share their stories, inspire others, and advocate for the importance of organ donation, making every moment on and off the field a testament to the power of second chances.
Team AZ made their mark, clinching 43 medals (25 gold, 5 silver, 13 bronze)! Each medal represented courage, a renewed health and a second chance at life. Their stories of survival, gratitude, and resilience—echoed throughout the event. From tearful reunions to triumphant finishes, the memories created will last a lifetime. Here’s a recap of the highlights:
Organ recipients competed in Division 1, while living donors and recipients of tissue, cornea, and bone marrow competed in Division 2. Some of the thrilling events included, cornhole, track and field, bowling, tennis, pickleball, Texas Hold’em and Trivia Challenge. Many of the competitions required teamwork, courage and precision while Texas Hold’em and the trivia challenge tested more of the mental sharpness. The games featured a diverse array of competitions that allowed each athlete to shine.
The recent Transplant Games were a testament to the incredible resilience and determination of both recipients and donors, with Jennifer Adams and Mark Harris standing out as shining examples of this spirit. Jennifer Adams, a double lung recipient, participated in the games for the first time and made an impressive debut by winning a bronze medal in track. Her achievement is not just a personal victory but also a powerful symbol of hope and possibility for others awaiting or recovering from transplants. Jennifer’s journey to the podium is a story of overcoming immense challenges and embracing a new lease on life with vigor and enthusiasm.
Mark Harris, a kidney donor to his son, also had an extraordinary performance at the games, bringing home a total of seven medals, including six gold and one silver. His success across multiple events highlights his exceptional athleticism and dedication. More importantly, it underscores the profound impact that organ donation can have, not only on the recipients but also on the donors themselves. Mark’s achievements serve as an inspiring reminder of the life-changing power of organ donation and the incredible potential that lies within everyone to make a difference.
Together, Jennifer and Mark’s stories at the Transplant Games this year celebrate the triumph of the human spirit and the deep connections forged through the gift of life. Their successes are a testament to the strength, perseverance, and unity that define the transplant community.
Throughout the week at the Transplant Games, several marquee events captivated participants and spectators alike. The Opening Ceremony, held at Legacy Arena, started with a vibrant parade of athletes from all states and countries in attendance showcasing their spirit and the life-saving power of organ donation. The atmosphere was filled with hope and gratitude as participants and attendees celebrated the gift of life. Tears flowed as hundreds of donors and donor families paraded into the arena. The ceremony featured emotional speeches, including one from Rodney Woodall, a heart transplant recipient and donor family member. He shared his journey and the impact of his son’s decision to become an organ donor. Bill Ryan, President and CEO of the Transplant Life Foundation, also spoke, highlighting the significance of transplantation and the unity it brings. The Quarter Century Club Dinner, a heartfelt gathering honored those who received transplants 25 years ago or more. Ed Ozier and Jill Bowers were honored for their remarkable milestone of living over 25 years with organ transplants. At the Donor Tribute, families and donors were recognized and honored for their selflessness.
The 2024 Transplant Games of America left an indelible mark on Birmingham. It reminded us that life is a precious gift, and every medal won symbolized a second chance.
